Art Yarns

Meet Masquerade, Berlin and Sassafras. Three of my favorite Alpaca's at Lukas Alpaca Ranch in Jackson, Mi. I am very fortunate to get to house sit at this ranch three to four times a year. On one of my house sitting times last year we had an un expected event! I was in the barn doing my morning chores, surprised that the "girls" were out in their field because they always wait to come in and "see" what I did to their house. I heard a yell somewhere and went to look but everything seemed fine. I finished my chores and headed to the house for my breakfast. I got to the front field and saw a wet mess laying in the field and everyone just looking on. "We had a Baby!" I yelled into the phone when I called a surprised Kathy and Lew. I was so very excited I could not think or talk very well and had to repeat the phrase a few times to get them to understand.

What a treat to have a baby born on my watch. Now we knew we had 3 due in two to three weeks but no one was due this weekend. Sassafras was due in two weeks and she has always delivered late in the past. Well Berlin was not waiting. He wanted to come out on a wonderful early fall day.

He was a hand full from minute one. I went to the field with the baby kit and did the stuff that needed done. Then I moved my van so I could watch Berlin's first day unfold without being to near him. The good rule at the house is hands off after initial baby check. I know it is a good rule, I know the baby needs to bond with mother and not me, I know, I know, I know, BUT....... He was so very cute!  I did manage to stay away for the most part.

It was wonderful to watch him take his first wobbly steps. It was fear full to watch him try to nurse and not be able to for a short time. Within a few hours he was not only eating any time he wanted, he was running in the field and had everyone in the field following him around.

The one thing he would not do the first day was go into or come out of the barn on his own. I got to lift him up and carry him into and out of the barn a few times. I would have left him alone per the rules but Sassafras needed water and it was in the barn.  I know I could have brought her a bucket but..... I didn't think of that until it was too late. At least that was my excuse. My one regret of the day was I did not have my camera with me.

I went down to the ranch a few days ago and Berlin agreed to have his picture on my yarn label and to promote my yarn. He had one condition though and that was his girlfriend also had to be in the picture. His mom said he was to young to be out there alone so I had to have her in the picture also. I think she just loves having her picture taken and she used his age as an excuse but either way is okay as they posed very nicely together.

Now every skein of art yarn you purchase will have their pictures on it.

Spinning Art Yarn is a great way to recycle partialy left over skeins of yarn into new arty accent yarns. Alpaca is always my fiber of choice for the base of the yarn.

Art Yarn

Last August a drum carder came into my life to my surprise! What it added was color, texture, and very fun spinning and dyeing projects. The end result of this journey you will see on this page.

These yarns are smaller skeins designed to be colorful, texture filled, accents on bigger projects.
I am not a great knitter but I will add a few projects I have completed to the pictures. I will also offer any one who purchases my yarn, before the end of March, half off on the next skein they purchase if they send me pictures of completed projects, I  put on this web site, to show how this wonderful yarn can be used.
I start with a base of Alpaca in most of my yarns and then start adding. There may be cotton, rayon, acrylic, wool, mohair and other natural and man made fibers in these yarns. There are a few yarns that are wool based and not alpaca based.  When this is the case I will note it in the description.
All of these yarns have been hand washed two times,  hand carded, in some cases hand dyed and in all cases, hand spun by me.
If you have a special project in mind and want a matching art yarn let me know and I will see what I can do. I will give free shipping on orders of 3 skeins or more. I will very rarely have more than one skein of any yarn. If you need more contact me and I will see if I have more of the "stuff" that went into it.

I was asked to jump out of my comfort zone and create wall art. This is the result. I had a wonderful time and will be doing more in the future. I love having friends who challenge me to do more than I think I can do!
